Job Description

JOB SUMMARY  

The Assistant, Midwife will work under the supervision of a Midwife to provide basic maternal and newborn health services. The Assistant, Midwife is responsible for assisting the Midwife in conducting antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, and ensuring the safety and well-being of mothers and babies. The Assistant, Midwife also participates in the promotion of maternal and newborn health, and the prevention of complications and infections.


MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

•    Assist the Midwife in performing antenatal care, such as measuring blood pressure, weight, and fetal heart rate, and providing health education and counseling to pregnant women
•    Prepare the delivery room and equipment, monitor the progress of labor, and support the mother during childbirth.
•    Follow maternal and newborn care protocols as implemented in the country.
•    Check vital signs and condition of the mother and the baby and provide breastfeeding and family planning advice.
•    Assist the Midwife in identifying and referring any complications or emergencies, such as pre-eclampsia, hemorrhage, or neonatal resuscitation, to the appropriate level of care
•    Maintain and sterilize the midwifery equipment, supplies, and drugs, and ensuring their proper storage, usage, and disposal.
•    Document and report all midwifery-related activities, outcomes, and incidents, and maintaining accurate and complete records.
•    Participate in the community mobilization and sensitization on maternal and newborn health, and disseminate accurate and timely information on health issues, services, and behaviors
•    Follow the infection prevention and control standard measures

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
•    Certificate or diploma in Assistant Midwifery or equivalent as applicable in the country from a recognized institution.
•    Valid license or registration to practice as an assistant Midwife, where applicable 
•    At least one year of relevant experience as an assistant Midwife in a health facility, preferably in a low-resource or humanitarian context.
•     Proficient in the use of midwifery equipment, supplies, and drugs, and familiar with the basic Midwifery techniques and procedures.
•    Able to assist the Midwife in performing antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care safely and effectively.
•    Able to identify and refer to any complications or emergencies promptly and appropriately.
