Position Summary:
The Water Resource Engineer will support the Gilgit-Baltistan Local Area Development Programme by leading the design, implementation, and management of water-related interventions aimed at improving ecosystem management, conservation, and sustainable water use. This role will focus on developing water management regimes, conserving wetlands and habitats, and implementing innovative water harvesting and irrigation systems. The Water Resource Engineer will work closely with local communities and project teams to ensure that all water resource activities align with organization’s environmental guidelines and contribute to the sustainable development goals of the project.
Key Responsibilities:
Water Management Implementation:
- Lead the design and construction of check dams to support water retention, groundwater recharge, and ecosystem conservation.
- Oversee the installation of rainwater harvesting systems and drip irrigation systems to improve water use efficiency in agriculture.
- Conduct watershed assessments and develop sustainable water management plans for local communities.
Water Quality Testing and Conservation:
- Perform swater quality tests to assess local water resources and identify areas needing intervention.
- Implement water conservation practices to enhance water quality, maintain ecosystem health, and promote biodiversity.
- Map wetlands and support the conservation of habitats to protect wildlife species.
Capacity Building and Training:
- Conduct training sessions on sustainable water management practices, targeting local communities, especially women and youth.
- Provide technical guidance and training to project teams and community members on maintaining water harvesting systems, drip irrigation, and other water conservation technologies.
- Engage in community awareness campaigns, including educational sessions, to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable water use and habitat conservation.
Community Engagement and Governance Support:
- Engage community stakeholders in project planning and implementation to ensure alignment with local needs and capacities.
- Work with community leaders to strengthen governance structures for water management, encouraging climate-sensitive and gender inclusive approaches.
- Participate in workshops and meetings to improve inter-sectoral coordination and governance for ecosystem and water resource management.
Renewable Energy Integration:
- Support the installation of solar-powered water pumps to enhance water accessibility for agricultural and domestic use.
- Collaborate with renewable energy expert to assess potential sites for hydropower and wind turbine installations.
Monitoring and Reporting:
- Monitor the progress and effectiveness of water management interventions, documenting best practices, success stories, and lessons learned.
- Prepare technical reports on water resource management activities, project milestones, and challenges, providing regular updates to the project management team.
- Maintain a database of water management data, including mapsand water quality reports.
Compliance and Branding:
Ensure that all water resource management practices comply with organization’s environmental standards and branding guidelines.
Maintain consistency in project messaging, visuals, and community outreach materials related to water resource initiatives.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Water Resource Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
- Experience: 4-5 years of experience in water resource management, watershed planning, or hydrology, with a focus on sustainable practices.
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of water conservation techniques, water quality assessment, and irrigation systems.
- Experience with designing and implementing water harvesting structures, drip irrigation, and renewable energy powered water systems.
- Proficiency in data analysis, environmental impact assessments, and GIS mapping.
- Interpersonal Skills:
- Excellent communication skills to work effectively with local communities and engage in participatory planning processes.
- Familiarity with local languages and cultural context of Diamer is highly desirable.
- Organizational Skills:
- Ability to manage multiple activities and coordinate with diverse stakeholders, ensuring timely project execution.
- Strong analytical and reporting skills, with attention to detail.
