Job Description Optometrist
Department: Optometry
Reports To: MS. Dr. Khalid Bin Aslam
Duties / Responsibilities
• Perform both simple refraction and cycloplegic refraction with use of different cycloplegic agents when required
• Prescribe the latest advances in spectacle lenses including progressive aspheric and safety/protective spectacles based on the visual needs of the patient.
• Conduct any other advance refractive correction procedures when required
• Perform low vision assessment and provide rehabilitative services/vision aids to visually impaired people, so that they use their functional vision more effectively
• Prescribe rigid and soft contact lenses including frequent replacement, and extended wear contact lenses.
• Conduct complex contact lens fitting for paediatric eye conditions, keratoconus, post-surgical complications, eye trauma, and other corneal ectasia Management of progressive keratoconus with the use of rigid gas permeable corneal/scleral contact lenses and non-invasive corneal cross linking
• Management of progressive myopia optically, pharmacologically and with the use of contact lenses such as orthokeratology
• Examination, Diagnosis, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of visual system and the eye, and referral to concerned specially when required
• Examine Eyes using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents to detect/diagnose ocular diseases and other abnormalities of binocular single vision and prescribe treatment. Consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologist if additional medical/surgical treatment is determined necessary.
• Overall supervision of Refraction unit by directing and dealing the daily activities of staff matters including ophthalmic technicians, opticians, refractions and clinical technologists.
• Diagnose ocular manifestation of systemic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and others that are often first detected in the eye and referral to physician/endocrinologist.
• Prescribe vision therapy, vision training or orthoptic treatment/exercises for children with learning problems or common binocular vision disorders, including strabismus and amblyopia.
• Provide pre-surgical and post-surgical care of cataracts, refractive laser treatment. retinal problems, and other conditions that require pre-surgical and post-surgical care.
• Advise/Perform diagnostic tests/procedures like B-Scan, FFA, OCT, Perimetry, Corneal Topography and can clinically evaluate and interpret according to existing condition of the patient.
• Perform ocular emergencies.
• Participate and lead on various camps, contribute to health promotional activities, screening for eye health, and blindness surveys and engage in field/clinical research.
• Can run their Optometry clinics independently as private practice or run their clinics in OPDs of public sector hospitals.
• Remove foreign bodies of anterior segment and can also perform removal of sutures. Syringing/probing etc.
• Counselling/Educating patients about vision/Eye health and lifestyle choices for protecting and enhancing good vision and health.
• Provide visual status certification when required.
• Facilitate in updating/senior management periodically about workload of patients in the ongoing research projects/patients managed in the unit.
